Makhuduthamaga engages people living with disabilities
JANE FURSE – Attendees of the Makhuduthamaga Local Municipality (MLM) Disability Indaba on 11 October at the council chamber in Jane Furse expressed their appreciation of the institution’s consistency in integrating the disability community’s programmes.
MLM held the indaba to provide a platform for people living with disabilities to raise and unearth shortfalls impacting their welfare.
Thomas Mashabela, MLM spokesperson, said the indaba reaffirmed the municipality’s commitment to pursuing its mission of ensuring efficient and effective engagement and communication with all municipal stakeholders, including the vulnerable and marginalized members of the community.
Participants were given an opportunity to raise concerns about communication barriers encountered by the deaf and blind community members during municipal engagements and persistent stereotypes against people living with albinism that still exist in the community.
The gathering further looked at exclusion of people with disabilities in the recruitment of workers for positions designed to meet their needs.
Mashabela indicated that the municipal council approved an enhanced organogram for the 2024/2025 financial period which includes a new position for a Braille and sign language interpreter to improve communication and participation between the municipality and the people living with disabilities.
Several municipal councilors and officials formed part of the Indaba, including Executive Committee member and Head of Community Services, Peter Tabane Rankoe, Portfolio Chairperson of Cooperate Services and Ward 19 Councillor, Dineo Moshabane, Acting Municipal Manager and Senior Manager of Corporate Services, Pakeng Matsetse.
Mayor Merah Mahlase reaffirmed that government is fully committed to working with all stakeholders, including the disability sector, through the Disability Forum.
Mahlase stated that the municipality, though her office, will arrange a meeting with the forum to monitor progress on issues relevant to people living with disabilities.
Furthermore, the mayor donated six wheelchairs to the disadvantaged persons, some of whom are living with severe conditions.
