Elias Motsoaledi women gather to commemorate Women’s Month
GROBLERSDAL – Elias Motsoaledi Local Municipality has joined the rest of the country in commemorations of Women’s Month with various municipal internal and external activations.
The municipality formally kick started its commemorations of the month through women in the workplace programme at the council chamber in Groblersdal on 8 August.
Municipal Manager, Reginah Makgata used the opportunity to urge women to stand by one another and not be afraid to assume leadership roles.
Makgata stressed on the need to remember the women of 1956 who stood up together and supported one another.
South Africa annually celebrates Women’s Month to pay tribute to more than 20 000 women who marched to the Union Building in Pretoria, Gauteng on 9 August 1956 in protest against the extension of the Pass Laws to women.
This year’s Women’s Month commemorations are observed under the theme: “Celebrating 30 Years of Democracy Towards Women’s Development.” They coincide with the 68th anniversary of the momentous 1956 march.
Various stakeholders including government departments and Non-Profit Organizations graced the municipality’s women in the workplace event in Groblersdal that day.
