EMLM Mayor concludes winter initiation period in Tafelkop
Tafelkop
With the 2024 winter initiation schools’ season concluded on Saturday 13 July, the Mayor of Elias Motsoaledi Local Municipality (EMLM), Cllr David Tladi, has welcomed about three hundred and fifty young initiates from various initiation schools in Tafelkop area back to their communities.
The initiates graduated after spending four weeks in the bushes, which is a traditional rite of passage signifying their transition into adulthood.
For males, this process aims to prepare them for responsible roles within society. A significant aspect of this initiation school involves educating these young men in cultural traditions.
Speaking during the homecoming ceremony, held at Bakwena ba Matsepe Tribal Office in Tafelkop, Mayor Tladi said he was impressed that all initiates returned back home in good health.
“No one got sick, no one complained and they were well taken care of like at home, drinking water and eating in short. Parents should not panic, this school is not only for people without further education,” Tladi said.
Bakwena ba Matsepe Traditional Leader, Kgoši-gadi Mologadi Matsepe said: “I am proud and happy, our children went to initiation school in one number and came back with the same number, which is three hundred and fifty. I encourage my people to support us in everything when we have a school like this in the future.”
The homecoming ceremony took place at Ga-Moloi Tribal Offices and Ga-Matsepe Tribal offices and was also attended by, among others, Chief Whip of EMLM Council, Cllr Elias Nduli, EMLM Municipal Manager Mme Namudi Reginah Makgata, ward committee members and the community at large.
