Limpopo SAPS Operation Vala Umgodi continues to enforce the zero tolerance approach to curb the scourge of illegal mining in the province.
The multidisciplinary forces comprising SAPS’s Tactical Response Team, Organised Crime Investigation Unit, Public Order Police and the National Intervention Unit in collaboration with the SANDF and Home affairs department continues with the high density operations.
They recovered a tipper truck at Ga-Makgopa Village outside Burgersfort on Saturday, May 18 during a raid of illegal mining and unlawful transportation of precious minerals.
“The team intercepted a tipper truck consisting of two trailers loaded with suspected stolen chrome and the head of a Scania truck after the driver, an unknown male, fled on foot, evading arrest leaving the truck behind,” said Limpopo SAPS spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba.
He said the police confiscated the trailers and the Scania truck, with the loaded chrome for further investigations. The SAPS urged local communities to report any forms of illegal mining. Information can be provided anonymously and will be treated with the strictest confidence. Illegal mining can be reported on Crime Stop number 08600 10111 or by using the MySAPS App
