MEC for Transport and Community Safety in Limpopo, Florence Radzilani, has on Tuesday 26 March, officiated the launching of the Provincial Easter Road Safety Campaign at Jane Furse in Makhuduthamaga Local Municipality (MLM).

The campaign commenced with a briefing session at the Pedi-Mamone Royal Council under the leadership of Kgoši Mampuru Mampuru IV in Mamone Village outside Jane Furse, before proceeding to Jane Furse Sports Complex.

During the campaign, Radzilani, joined by law enforcement operation officers, started by conducting a road block at Jane Furse roads to encourage motorists to take extra precautions during their trips within the province and practice road safety at all times.

Addressing the campaign, MEC Radzilani highlighted that Sekhukhune District Municipality (SDM) was chosen to be the host for the Easter Road Safety Campaign launch due to the number of fatalities recorded during the past Festive Season.

According to Radzilani, Sekhukhune District accounted for 48 fatalities during the past Festive Season and 21 were pedestrian fatalities.

MEC took time to appreciate the intervention by the South African Small Bus Operators Council and Kopano Bus Company for assisting Government in its quest towards women empowerment.

Furthermore, Radzilani has on Monday 25 March, handed-over 50 police vehicles to intensify safety during Easter period and beyond.

The vehicles were handed-over to Limpopo Provincial Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe to equip various police units throughout the province including the Detective Units, Stock-theft Units and Community Police Forums.

“This windfall takes place ahead of the Easter long weekend and this injection is expected to help the police to jerk up their crime fighting endeavours, during this period,” she said.

MEC Radzilani urged upon members of the police that they should prioritise the use of these vehicles for community use.

She further indicated that these vehicles should be used to intercept criminal syndicates, such as stock theft and drug trade in our communities.

The MEC concluded her address, by also calling upon community members, to respect states assets, and continue to report perpetrators of crimes at all times.

Addressing the occasion, Lieutenant General Hadebe called upon members of the police to take extra care of the new vehicles and not neglect the old ones.

Hadebe also made a clarion call to community members, to refrain from stoning police vehicles, as these are government resources that should service them, in their time of need.
