Artisans certificated after training, get tools of trade

POLOKWANE – Following a successful completion of an intense 24-month skills training programme, a total of 120 blissful artisans from all the five districts of Limpopo province received their certificates and tools of trade on 22 March in Polokwane.

The empowerment initiative was facilitated by the National Youth Service division of the Extended Public Works Programme (EPWP), in partnership with MerSeta. The project is in line with youth empowerment and development strategies.

The cohort received training in welding, electrical works, diesel mechanics and fitting and turning for a period of two years.

As part of their sent-off, the Department of Public Works, Roads and Infrastructure, led by the Acting Head of Department, Mr. Daddy Phukuntsi, who represented MEC Nkakareng Rakgoale, handed over tools of trade in order for them to start working in their communities and participate in the economy of the province.

Mr. Phukuntsi indicated that the artisans who venture into business should be nurtured, monitored and supported as this will contribute towards regional local economic development and create opportunities and jobs within communities.

Vusani Munyai, one of the beneficiaries, spoke on how the programme intervened in his life and indicated that through the initiative, he has been able to start a small welding business and at least has 10 other young people working with him.
