Duo facing charges on assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm remain in custody

GROBLERSDAL – The 63 year-old owner of WIPS security company, Piet Groenewald and his stepson Stephan Greeff (27), who were arrested on 18 January in connection with an assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm charge, were remanded to custody when they appeared before the Groblersdal Magistrate’s Court on Monday,  11 March.

The bail application of the duo was dismissed and they had their matter postponed to 4 April 2024, for further investigations.

Groenewald and Greeff were arrested following an incident in which Groenewald hit one of the security company’s guards, the 30 year-old Veneruru Kavari , with a hard object.

The assault on Kavari came after he was accused of having been found intoxicated while on duty at a network tower battery in Kwaggafontein, Mpumalanga province.

After the supervisor drove the victim to Groblersdal to discuss the matter with the manager, Groenewald allegedly hit him with a hard object and allegedly instructed Greeff to unleash their pet dog on Kavari, who is a Namibian national. The dog bit Kavari on both legs.

Colonel Masela Ledwaba, Limpopo Provincial Police spokesperson, informed that the victim reported the matter to the police and a case of assault GBH was opened.

Ledwaba further said that the two suspects were traced and arrested the following day. He mentioned that according to preliminary information, the 30 year old victim was performing his guard duties at a network tower battery on Wednesday, January 17 in Kwaggafontein when the supervisor paid an oversight visit.
