Executive Mayor expresses her sympathies following havoc caused by storm
ELIAS MOTSOALEDI – Sekhukhune District Municipality Executive Mayor, Minah Bahula has extended her deepest sympathies to the families impacted by the recent heavy rains and storms that ravaged several households in Elias Motsoaledi Local Municipality.
The heavy rains and storm caused havoc in parts of the municipality on Monday, 26 February afternoon, leaving a trail of devastation and mayhem as residents were left with nothing but the clothes they were wearing.
Wards 22, 23, 24 together with villages including Mogaung, Legolaneng, Mphepha, Mzanzi, Phumula, Sephaku, Vlakfontein, bore the brunt of the heavy rains and storm.
According to Sekhukhune District Municipality, reports indicate significant damage to property, with shattered windows, compromised roofs and infrastructure such as electricity and bridges suffered considerable impact, leaving roads impassable.
The Mampuru family went through a harrowing experience when their home was breached by the force of the storm. The family members were transported to Glen Cowie Hospital for medical treatment after they sustained injuries. They were however, discharged that evening.
Slindile Primary School and Tshita Crèche saw substantial damage, compounding the challenge the entire community faced.
Executive Mayor Bahula and Elias Motsoaledi Local Municipality Mayor, David Tladi have since mobilized resources to establish a multi-sectoral task team, to be deployed to the affected areas. The task team coordinates efforts to provide relief and support to those in need, with focus to restore essential services and infrastructure.
“Despite the severity of the situation, we are thankful that no fatalities have been reported thus far. However, the road to recovery will undoubtedly be challenging, and it is imperative that we stand united as a community to overcome this adversity,” said Bahula.
