Elias Motsoaledi communities converge at eRholweni to commemorate King Nyabela
ROOSSENEKAL – Elias Motsoaledi Local Municipality became a hive of activity when an event held to commemorate the Amandebele King, King Nyabela, took place in Roossenekal, ward 30 recently.
King Mabhoko III, of the Ndzundza Mabhoko, led the remembrance occasion on December 19 to celebrate the regime of King Nyabela, who is regarded as one of the Kings in the history of the Amandebele nation whose fighting spirit led to the end of colonialism and land invasion in the 1800s.
The colourful traditional celebration takes place annually at eRholweni, which King Nyabela used to wage war against white settlers to protect his nation and land.
The episode seeks to provide a platform to share valuable anthropology to the youth about the history and heritage of the Amandebele nation and also strengthen social cohesion.
The commemoration also marks the day on which King Nyabela provided protection to King Mampuru of the Bapedi nation against the Afrikaner onslaught.
