SDM takes steps to address water crisis
SERULENG – Communities of Ga-Marishane and Tisane villages witnessed a fundamental transformation when Sekhukhune District Municipality officially launched a repairs and maintenance of water reticulation at Seruleng Village recently.
Lemson Moropyane, SDM Head of Communications, said the high impact development follows a R20 million Memorandum of Understanding between Makhuduthamaga Local Municipality and the district municipality signed in June last year.
SDM Executive Mayor, Minah Bahula said the high and rapid growth of population led to an even higher demand of water supply in the area.
Bahula indicated, “Therefore, we had to employ other tactics and new strategic interventions to give our people water. We are therefore encouraged by the work ethic of contractors who have worked tirelessly to deliver this monumental development just in less than two months. The patience and the cooperation of our communities is indeed humbling, as there were no interruptions of any sort.”
Bahula committed to the acceleration of provision of water and sanitation. “As it remains our fundamental priority as a collective, this collaboration with the local municipalities is essential and we hope that more of these good stories of development are still coming,” concluded Bahula.
Moropyane said in accordance with the memorandum signed, Makhuduthamaga Local Municipality will take over the responsibility of repairing and construct new pipelines.
He highlighted that just over 1600 households will benefit from the developmental project which is expected to change lives for the better.
“The villages include, Maweleseng, Mokrobishane, Seruleng, Ntswaneng and Borderspruit. Similar projects are underway in Mamone ward 7, Ga-Masemola ward 27 and Ntwane in ward 7. A service provider in Tswaing Village is yet to be appointed to carry out work and it is expected that all these projects will be completed by the end of January 2024. Sekhukhune District Municipality is still engaged in high talks with other local municipalities such as Ephraim Mogale, Fetakgomo-Tubatse and Elias Motsoaledi to enter into the same agreement, although, terms and conditions may not be similar,” said Moropyane.
He maintained that communities were urged to protect the water resources and guard against vandalism and theft.
Executive Mayor Bahula thanked her collective including Members of the Mayoral Committee and the administration.
