Man sentenced to eight years imprisonment for murder of his cousin

MOLETLANE – The 59 year-old accused Ruben Makhafola appeared before the Mokopane Regional Court on Friday, 06 October where he was convicted and sentenced to eight years imprisonment for murder of his cousin.

The court heard that on Saturday, 06 March 2023, the accused and his cousin Norious Kekana (58), both residing at Matome Village in Moletlane area outside Zebediela, got embroiled in a heated argument relating to family issues when the accused went to his house, fetched an axe and hacked his cousin to death.

Colonel Malesela Ledwaba, Limpopo Provincial Police spokesperson, pointed out that he was arrested by police at the scene of the crime and charged with murder.

Ledwaba informed that the case was allocated to Detective Constable Billy Nchabeleng of Moletlane SAPS. He was remanded in custody until he was eventually granted bail in May 2023.

“Makhafola made numerous court appearances until he was convicted. He was sentenced to eight years direct imprisonment for murder with no option of a fine,” explained Ledwaba.

The Provincial Commissioner of SAPS in Limpopo, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe commended the investigating officer, Detective Constable Billy Nchabeleng, for the sterling job that led to the convictions and sentencing of the accused.
