Eight suspected illegal miners apprehended and equipments seized
PHASHA SKRAAL – Eight suspects have been arrested in connection with illegal mining activities and mining equipment confiscated at Phasha Skraal, Twickernham in Sekhukhune District on Tuesday, 10 October.
The arrest is part of the South African Police Service’s Provincial Organised Crime Unit’s decisive action to combat illicit mining activities that continue to mar the district.
Colonel Malesela Ledwaba, Limpopo Provincial Police spokesperson, informed that the team, in collaboration with private security companies, pounced on the suspects while illegally mining chrome in the said area.
Ledwaba revealed that police confiscated five generators, 13 jackhammers, 18 shovels, six spades, four hammers, 21 jackhammer chisels and three wheelbarrows.
The Provincial Commissioner of SAPS in Limpopo, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe said: “We call upon stakeholders, including residents, businesses, and concerned groups, to join us in this crucial fight against illicit mining. If you have any information about illegal mining operations or suspect any activity, please report it to the police immediately. Our dedicated members are always on high alert to respond to any tip-off.”
The eight suspects, aged between 18 and 55, consisting of three foreign nationals and five South Africans were expected to appear before the Mecklenburg Periodical Court on Wednesday, 11 October facing charges of illegal mining.
