The Mayor of Fetakgomo Tubatse Local Municipality (FTLM) Cllr Eddie Maila has on February 2, met with the leadership of the local taxi associations to engage on challenges affecting taxi operators operating within the municipal area. The meeting was held at the municipal chamber and was honoured by the leaders of the Eastern Leolo, Druta and Bulltda associations.
The meeting enabled the taxi associations to present key operational challenges and engage the municipality on practical interventions to sustain and grow the local taxi industry.
A key matter raised was the request for municipal intervention to facilitate business opportunities related to the transportation of workers from surrounding villages to mining operations and other sectors within the municipal area.
The taxi associations indicated that they had previously attempted to engage mining houses directly on these matters, but without success. They further highlighted that limited access to such transportation opportunities has negatively affected the sustainability of their operations.
Discussions also emphasised the importance of creating a conducive operating environment while prioritising the safety of passengers and stability within the transport sector.
Addressing the leadership of the taxi associations, Maila welcomed the initiative to engage the municipality on matters of mutual interest and local economic development. He acknowledged the critical role played by the taxi industry in promoting mobility, economic activity and social stability within FTLM.
The Mayor appealed for calm and constructive engagements and committed to initiating engagements with relevant stakeholders to address the concerns raised. He further indicated that the municipality will convene all affected parties to discuss the matter, noting that heightened tensions would undermine stability and economic activities.
He reaffirmed the municipality’s commitment to ongoing engagements with the taxi industry and indicated that regular meetings will be convened to provide updates, monitor progress and address emerging issues requiring municipal attention.
