St Rita’s Hospital in shambles

GLEN COWIE – The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) in Makhuduthamaga Sub-Region has slammed the conditions at St Rita’s Hospital in Glen-Cowie Village, describing it as “deplorable” and “unacceptable”.

The party said after paying an oversight homage to the health facility on Wednesday 3 December 2025.

EFF Councillor in Makhuduthamaga Local Municipality (MLM), Gift Machaba, led the oversight visit and expressed outrage at the state of the hospital.

“The hospital is not clean at all, inside and outside. Patients arrive as early as 04:00am and are left unattended for hours. It’s a travesty,” Machaba said.

The EFF team found that the hospital relies on water tankers for its daily needs, and the clinic within the hospital premises is understaffed. The hospital itself is operating with only four staff members in the clinic within the hospital, exacerbating the challenges faced by patients.

“The rubbish bin remains unattended, contributing to the foul smell around the hospital. It is unacceptable that our people are forced to receive healthcare in such conditions,” Machaba added.

The EFF has blamed the current management, alleging that appointments have been made based on political motives rather than merit.

“All these shenanigans are a result of comradeship appointments to positions of responsibility, driven by political motives,” Machaba said.

The EFF has vowed to continue pushing for improvements at St Rita’s Hospital, ensuring that the community receives quality healthcare services in a conducive environment.

At the time of going to press, the Limpopo Department of Health could not respond the publication’s enquiries.
