PHALABORWA – Located within the breath-taking Hans Merensky Nature Reserve near Phalaborwa, the Muti wa Vatsonga Open-Air Museum, is a living cultural museum that showcases the traditions, history, and lifestyle of the Tsonga people.
This unique museum is designed like a traditional Tsonga kraal, featuring authentic huts, homesteads, and community spaces constructed from natural materials such as clay, wood, and thatch.
Visitors to the museum can explore displays of traditional crafts, clothing, and utensils, gaining insight into the daily lives of Tsonga families in the past.
The museum also offers live cultural demonstrations, including drumming and dancing where tourists can experience the vibrant rhythms and movements of Tsonga music and dance.
It also features storytelling for young and old to learn about the rich oral traditions and stories of the Tsonga people and spiritual rituals performed to witness the deep connection between the community and their heritage through spiritual rituals and practices.
The Muti wa Vatsonga Open-Air Museum is more than just a heritage site, it is a bridge between the past and present, preserving ancestral knowledge while educating younger generations and travellers.

The Muti wa Vatsonga Open-Air Museum is opening from Monday to Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and offers free entrance.
The museum offers a range of activities, including game viewing for tourists to spot a variety of wildlife, including antelope, giraffe, wildebeest, warthog and zebra.
It also features hiking trails to explore the reserve’s heights, including the 1km Mopane Interactive Trail and the 32km 3-day Giraffe hiking trail.
Bird watching is among the museum’s activities where tourists can enjoy the rich birdlife along the Great Letaba River, which runs through the reserve.
