The Elias Motsoaledi Local Municipality (EMLM) took decisive action on Monday 11 August 2025, conducted an operation to remove unauthorized shacks and informal settlements erected along the R25 Road in Aquaville.
The operation was conducted in partnership with key stakeholders, including the Department of Home Affairs (DoHA), Department of Social Development (DSD), South African Police Service (SAPS), local Community Policing Forum (CPF), Gunmar Security, Loskop Regional Authorities, 24/7 Touring, and other supporting entities.
According to Simon Makua, EMLM Spokesperson, the operation was undertaken in the interest of public safety and to uphold the integrity of critical road infrastructure.
“The unauthorized structures posed significant risks to both pedestrians and motorists, obstructing visibility, hindering road maintenance, and endangering lives,” he said.
Makua emphasized that the erection of structures on designated road reserves constitutes illegal land occupation and a violation of spatial planning regulations.
“We call on all community members to work in partnership with the municipality to report illegal land occupations and to follow lawful channels when seeking access to land or housing. This action reflects our commitment to ensuring equitable treatment of all residents,” Makua said.
He said the municipality expressed its sincere appreciation to all partners for their support in upholding the rule of law and promoting public safety.
Makua emphasized that the Elias Motsoaledi Municipality remains dedicated to a lawful, humane, and transparent process in all its operations.
He said the municipality’s action is part of its mandate and authority to prevent land invasions, under relevant municipal by-laws committed to maintain orderly land use and protecting road users.
