Uhuru Film Festival 2025: Youth revolt takes centre stage in Mokopane
MOKOPANE – The highly-anticipated Uhuru Film Festival 2025 Edition, was held from Thursday 3 to Sunday 6 July 2025 at the Oasis Hotel in Mokopane, showcasing the best of African cinema and celebrating the voices of emerging filmmakers.
The festival, under the theme: “Youth Revolt”, highlighted the importance of young creative minds, reclaiming their narratives and pushing back against stereotypes.
The Uhuru Film Festival provides a platform for emerging African filmmakers to showcase their work, connect with global audiences, and gain industry insights.
This year’s festival featured a range of activities, including film screenings, workshops, and panel discussions with industry experts.
Some of the festival’s highlights included the opening night gala, featuring a glamorous red carpet affair at PV Lifestyle Restaurant in Mokopane, where filmmakers, celebrities, and dignitaries gathered to celebrate African cinema.
Later, as part of the highlights, the festival seen a curated screening of powerful African documentaries tackling social justice, land, memory, mental health, and identity.
Industry panels and practical master-classes, led by veterans in directing, acting, and production, provided valuable insights and networking opportunities with attending young people.
The festival was concluded with the Uhuru Awards Ceremony, a grand finale honouring grassroots excellence in five bold categories, from Best Feature to Best Monologue.
The festival also featured workshops designed to hone the skills of aspiring creatives, including major turning points in a film, facilitated by Tumelo Moutlana and acting for camera, facilitated by Kgopotso Seth Chawane.
The Uhuru Film Festival team expressed heartfelt gratitude to its funders, partners, guests, creatives, volunteers, and audiences for making the festival a success.
Special thanks went to the Presidential Employment Stimulus Programme (PESP) and the National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF) for backing the festival’s vision and investing in the creative economy.
With its focus on youth and creativity, the festival is set to continue making waves in the film industry for years to come.
