SDM SMMEs recognised at Prestigious Gala Dinner
MOGORWANE – Small, Micro, and Medium Enterprises (SMMEs) from across the Sekhukhune District Municipality (SDM) were honoured during a Gala Dinner held at Boiketlong Lodge in Mogorwane Village outside Jane Furse on Monday 31 June 2025.
The event was part of the build-up to the inaugural Sekhukhune District Tourism Summit, taken place on Tuesday 1 July 2025 at Hlako Tisane Cultural Village in Ga-Tisane Village.
During the Gala Dinner, more than 20 SMMEs received certificates in recognition of their funding support through the SDM District Economic Development Programme for the 2024/2025 financial year.
In total, over 70 local businesses were funded this year alone, with 31 of them in the farming sector.
SDM Executive Mayor, Cllr Minah Bahula, presented the certificates and stressed the district’s commitment to empowering local enterprises.
“Our SMMEs are key in addressing poverty and unemployment. We plan to support over 40 more businesses in the upcoming 2025/2026 financial year. We implore on the funded SMMEs to extend the benchmark lessons and cascade to local communities and enhance inclusive economy development,” said the mayor.
Bahula said the district has been steadily increasing investment in local enterprise development since the launch of the financial support initiative in 2022/2023.
The Gala Dinner was attended by key stakeholders, including the Mayor of Makhuduthamaga Local Municipality (MLM) Cllr Merah Mahlase, Acting Mayor of Fetakgomo Tubatse Local Municipality (FTLM) Cllr Mashego, and MMCs from the district municipality as well as councillors from local municipalities.
Remarking on the Tourism Summit, Executive Mayor Bahula, whose key address was presented by MMC Carpos Ngobeni, highlighted key attractions in Sekhukhune.
“The Sekhukhune district is historically a tourism destination of choice. We want to extend an invitation to the world to come and explore the tourism opportunities and experience the stunning natural beauty of Sekhukhuneland,” said Ngobeni.
