Fake goods worth over R20 million recovered in Burgersfort
BURGERSFORT – A multidisciplinary team consisting of various role-players managed to confiscate counterfeit goods worth over R20 million in Burgersfort Central Business District between last Monday and Wednesday.
Colonel Malesela Ledwaba, Limpopo Provincial Police spokesperson, said the confiscated goods are currently being held by police.
Ledwaba indicated the massive recovery resulted from a raid conducted by members of the National Counterfeit Unit, the National Roving Team, SAPS Burgersfort and Customs South African Revenue Services.
He stated that more than 10 shops were raided in the town and the goods included clothes and cosmetics in the main.
The Provincial Commissioner of South African Police Service (SAPS) in Limpopo, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, praised the team for swiftly operationalising the information which led to the recovery of the counterfeit goods.
General Hadebe further sent out a stern warning to communities and the business sector not to buy suspected stolen goods.
“Receiving or buying stolen goods is an offence and those found in possession of such goods will be arrested and prosecuted,” Hadebe warned.
