Heavy Rains Cause Widespread Road Damage in Elias Motsoaledi Municipality The recent summer downpours have caused extensive damage to roads across the country, with many routes becoming impassable due to waterlogging and erosion. The persistent rainfall has led to severe wear and tear, resulting in the formation of potholes and the deterioration of already vulnerable road surfaces. In the Elias Motsoaledi Local Municipality, officials have acknowledged the extent of the damage inflicted by the heavy rains, particularly on municipal roads. Of notable concern is the Tafelkop Stadium access road, which is currently under construction and has been heavily affected. Speaking to the Sekhukhune Times, Municipal Spokesperson Mr Simon Makua confirmed that deteriorating road conditions within the municipality remain a key concern. he stated that the municipality is actively pursuing measures to address the matter. “With regard to the Tafelkop Stadium road, Council has resolved to proceed with the construction as planned. This project is part of our core mandate and is vital for improving access to the stadium and enhancing infrastructure in the surrounding area,” said Makua. In addition to the ongoing project, the municipality has initiated a Re-graveling Programme, structured according to clusters. “This initiative seeks to upgrade road infrastructure, improve accessibility, and promote safer travel for all road users,” he added. Through these interventions, the municipality aims to create a road network that is effective, safe, and sustainable—meeting the day-to-day needs of local communities. The Elias Motsoaledi Local Municipality has committed to providing regular progress updates to keep residents informed on the implementation and status of these infrastructure improvements.
