Great North Transport allocated R2 million
LEBOWAKGOMO – Great North Transport (GNT) has been allocated a total of R206 667 million in the 2025/2026 financial year.
The budget allocation is for acquisition of buses to provide much-needed relief to the ageing fleet, enhance operational efficiency and passenger experience.
Limpopo MEC for Finance, Kgabo Mahoai made the announcement during the tabling of the 2025/2026 budget at the provincial legislature in Lebowakgomo on 25 March.
The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Limpopo has criticised the allocation, stressing that it was done despite continued operational collapse of GNT.
GNT is currently being probed by the Special Investigating Unit for alleged corruption, maladministration and malfeasance under a presidential proclamation. Some of the matters under investigation date back more than 20 years to 2022. Pensioners of the company, whose pension fund contributions were allegedly misappropriated, have sought justice for decades – some tragically passing away without resolution.
In a stamen released on 4 February, the DA stated that it has been at the forefront of exposing the crisis at GNT and advocating for urgent action, citing that the collapse of the company disproportionately affects the most vulnerable members of the society.
The party indicated that had the board of GNT exercised its accounting and fiduciary duties with diligence expected of a public sector entity, it is unlikely that GNT would be in its current state of collapse.
“Under the board’s watch, millions owed to creditors remain unpaid. As the accounting authority, the board must be held accountable for the breakdown of internal controls within the entity,” read the statement.
Meanwhile, Limpopo Economic Development, Environment and Tourism has been allocated R5 181 billion over the next three financial years, of which R2 287 billion is made available for the 2025/2026 financial year.
Included in the 2025/2026 allocation, is R1 114 billion set aside for transfers to Limpopo Economic Development Agency (LEDA), R102 064 million for Limpopo Tourism Agency and R72 143 million for Limpopo Gambling Board.
The transfer to LEDA is inclusive of R730 788 million for the implementation of Musina Makhado Special Economic Zone and Fetakgomo-Tubatse Industrial Hub catalytic projects and other economic development enablers.
