Library Awareness Week carnival livens up Groblersdal Mall
GROBLERSDAL – The Department of Sport, Arts and Culture, together with Elias Motsoaledi Local Municipality held a Library Awareness Week campaign at the Groblersdal Mall on 17 March.
The campaign aimed to promote the significance of libraries, highlighting their role in education, access to information and cultural enrichment.
Various activities were conducted, including interactive workshops, storytelling sessions for children and information booths were erected to showcase library resources and services.
This was in line with the South African Library Week 2025 which is observed to highlight the role libraries play in a democratic society, the promotion of access to information, fostering literacy and supporting community development by providing inclusive spaces for learning and social interaction.
It week was observed under the theme: “Libraries for Sustainable Communities”, emphasising the libraries’ contribution to sustainability and equality with communities.
Makgoke Mohlala, EMLM Senior Manager for Community Services, indicated that libraries are the heart of communities, providing access to knowledge, education and opportunities for social mobility.
Mohlala stressed that libraries serve as vibrant community hubs that foster a culture of reading, learning and innovation.
“As we celebrate this milestone, we reaffirm our commitment to promoting literacy, education and community development through libraries. We are committed to supporting Library Week celebrations and promoting a culture of reading and learning,” remarked Mohlala.
He highlighted that libraries face a number of challenges such as lack of interest among young people.
