Makhuduthamaga forges ahead with second landfill site establishment plan
GA-MASEMOLA – Strides have been made on the planned establishment of the second municipal landfill site in Ga-Masemola within the Makhuduthamaga Local Municipality.
The municipality has earmarked a piece of land in the area for another landfill site to maximise and provide controlled and authorised locations for the disposal of solid waste, including household and non-hazardous waste.
The move seeks to protect the environment from contamination and promote public health. Thomas Mashabela, MLM spokesperson, indicated that the third landfill site proposed is planned to be established at Seteneng Village to widen the municipality’s waste management efforts.
Mashabela informed that the Limpopo Economic Development, Environment and Tourism (LEDET) is funding the new project through appointed specialists for scoping, licensing and construction.
“Once the consultation process is done, the next step will be implemented. The draft report is available at all municipal libraries and members of the public can send their feedback at given@mamadi.co.za,” stated Mashabela.
On March 11, the institution met with the local traditional council to solicit feedback on the geological, heritage and land survey studies conducted for the second municipal landfill site project.
Mayor Merah Mahlase has encouraged members of the public, particularly those familiar with the area, to submit their comments before March 31 to assist with development of scoping.
Mahlase stressed on the necessity to implement the approved municipality’s Integrated Waste Management Plan and the expansion of the waste disposal site.
She added that will ensure the prevention of the spread of diseases and protection of public health by controlling the storage and disposal of waste in a safe and sanitary manner.
