Suspect arrested in connection with police officer’s shooting remanded to custody

JANE FURSE – A 26 year-old suspect has been arrested in connection with an armed robbery and attempted murder incident involving an off-duty South African Police Service (SAPS) Warrant Officer in Mashishing Village, Jane Furse on 14 January.

Lieutenant Colonel Stephen Thakeng, Limpopo Provincial Police spokesperson, said according to information at police disposal, the off-duty police officer stationed at SAPS Burgersfort was parking his white Toyota Hilux bakkie outside Mashishing Village next to Library Gardens when a group of five unknown armed men approached him.

Thakeng informed that the unknown men opened fire to the officer’s upper body and the member alighted from his vehicle in an attempt to defend himself, only to be shot again in the lower body and left unconscious.

“The suspects then fled the scene with his service pistol and two cellphones. A passerby discovered him and managed to call the emergency medical services personnel. He was then transported to a local hospital for medical attention,” explained Thakeng.

He added that in the early hours of Wednesday, 29 January morning, a joint-driven operation consisting of the Nebo Visible Policing Unit and Jane Furse Tracking Team, was executed, resulting in the apprehension of a 26 year-old male suspect at Madibong Village under the Jane Furse policing precinct. Furthermore, the suspect led the police to his residence and voluntarily handed over the firearm with ammunition robbed during the incident.
