DUP act against GBV

NEBO

The Democratic United Party (DUP), leaded by its President General Tonic Manchidi and the DUP Women Alliance leaders and Limpopo conveners, have on 27 January 2025 converged at the Nebo Magistrate’s Court to seek justice for one of their member who was allegedly assaulted by a half-naked man at Mogorwane Village.

According to the party, during the incident, the victim was part of a group of DUP members who were busy conducting spaza shops compliance inspections in December last year.

“During the incident the half-naked man approached and victimized DUP ward 10 female chairperson, the perpetrator just came from nowhere and started insulting the female leader of the DUP even threatening to rape her,” said DUP President Manchidi.

Manchidi indicated that DUP has a serious stance policies against Gender Based Violence (GBV) and will support the victim to ensure that justice is served.

“We are extremely disappointed by the lack of urgency from our courts when it comes to issues of GBV against women. GBV is a serious global issue with devastating consequences and it encompasses a wide range of harmful acts, including physical, sexual, psychological and economic abuse,” he said.

Manchidi added that addressing GBV against women requires a multi-faceted approach that tackles the root causes of this violence.

“This includes challenging harmful gender norms, promoting gender equality, and strengthening legal frameworks to protect women’s rights, and our justice system lacks that,” he said.

Manchidi emphasized that the party plans to intensify the war against GBV with training community ambassadors.

The case was postponed to 17 February 2025 for further investigations and Manchidi said they will be attending the court proceedings.
