Schools’ safety and security initiatives intensify
LIMPOPO – The South African Police Service (SAPS) in Limpopo has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring that the safety and security of learners and educators is attained as schools commence with the 2025 academic year.
Brigadier Hlulani Mashaba, Limpopo Provincial Police spokesperson, said in collaboration with the Limpopo Department of Education (LDoE), SAPS have implemented a comprehensive school safety programme which includes various initiatives aimed at creating a secure learning and teaching environment.
One of the key initiatives is the Adopt-a-School programme, where SAPS, through Social Crime Prevention members, actively engage with schools to provide security support, promote crime prevention awareness and offer mentorship to learners.
Mashaba indicated that the programme has been instrumental in building positive relationships between law enforcement and school communities, ensuring that learners feel safe and protected in their educational spaces.
“As schools have reopened, the members of SAPS have intensified patrols around schools, especially during peak hours, to prevent any potential threats. In addition, specialised safety measures, such as visible police presence during school hours and at school events, have been enhanced,” stated Mashaba.
Regular safety drills and awareness campaigns on bullying, substance abuse and violence prevention, together with increased collaboration with local communities and stakeholders to identify and address safety concerns as well as support for school staff and students, through guidance and counselling initiatives aimed at fostering a safer, more supportive school environment, have been implemented in collaboration with the LDoE.
“These initiatives are part of an ongoing commitment to ensuring that every learner in Limpopo has access to a safe and conducive learning environment. SAPS remains ready to respond to any challenges, and we urge all stakeholders to work together with the police to protect our children and ensure a successful 2025 academic year,” alluded Mashaba.
Members of the public are encouraged to report any safety concerns or criminal activities around schools to the nearest police station or through the crime hotline 08600 10111.
