Bahula and Maila honour top matric pupils with gadgets and certificates

Twelve top performing matric pupils from Fetakgomo Tubatse Local Municipality were honoured by mayor Eddie Maila together with the Sekhukhune District Municipality (SDM)’s executive mayor Minah Bahula on Friday.
The two leaders hosted a celebratory luncheon to honour the top performing matriculants and schools from Sekhukhune East District.
The event was held at Thaba Moshate Hotel, Casino and Convention Resort on 17 January . It was attended by circuit managers, 2024 matriculants, parents and representatives from the Sekhukhune East District.
Bahula and Maila presented the learners with personal computers, certificates of achievement, and R2500 vouchers in recognition of their exceptional performance.
On January 14, Limpopo education MEC Mavhungu Lerule-Ramakhanya announced that Sekhukhune East has been recognised as the most improved district in the province in terms of matric results. The district achieved an 84% pass rate in 2024, climbing from 74.7% of 2023.
Maila said he was proud of the matric class of 2024. “We are delighted to honour matric pupils who have outdone themselves to attain outstanding results despite the adversities of 2024.
“We urge parents, learners, teachers and the school management teams to work together in order to attain a 100% pass rate.
“ The municipality doors are forever open, and we are more than ready to work with local schools to improve our results. Let’s come with programs and strategies that will ensure the FTLM pupils are also tops on national level.”
Maila congratulated the class of 2024, the teachers and the school management teams.
“FTLM will continue supporting education locally, we will be sponsoring about 20-25 matric pupils with bursaries that covers their tuition fees, residences, stationery and many more needs.”
To the pupils, Maila urged them to focus on their studies while at institutions of higher learning and to fly the Fetakgomo Tubatse flag high.
“There are so many challenges at tertiary institutions. Study hard and only focus on your studies.
He said the FTLM has empowered more than 200 youths in the form of experiential learning and internships
The executive mayor, Bahula said a good pass rate achieved by the district will combat poverty in the region in future. “The government will support pupils that performed outstandingly . We will also monitor our pupils at tertiary institutions to ensure they come back as graduates.”
Representing the Sekhukhune East District was Dr JF Malatji, he thanked the FTLM and SDM for the support and investing in education.
“This is an encouragement to the class of 2025, they can now see that support is there from government institutions. I believe they will pull up their socks in order to also achieve this kind of gifts.”
Malatji said as a district they have done tremendously well. “We have improved a lot with our matric results, we now have 15 schools that achieved 100% pass rate. In 2022 and 2023, only one school had a 100%. All our 16 circuits have improved.”
He asked for support from the business sector and government during matric camps.
