Five of fisherman’s killers still on the run
STEELPOORT
The Limpopo SAPS are still on the hunt for the five of the six suspects who killed a fisherman from Lydenburg at Tubatse Dam on December 29.
According to the police, the deceased, John Peter Grobler (41), known as JP, was with his father-in-law and two sons, aged nine and 13, fishing at the dam when he was attacked by a group of men at about 18:30.
“Apparently they were attacked by six unknown African males carrying assegais and golf clubs,” said the Limpopo police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Stephen Thakeng. “The man was attacked, stabbed and hit with the clubs as he was sitting in his camping chair. He managed to approach his vehicle, a white Ford Ranger, to get his firearm. One shot was fired and the assailants fled.”
Thakeng said Grobler managed to drive his relatives away to safety in his injured state. “He could not drive any further, and the father-in-law drove to Lannex Cross. The police and emergency medical services certified the man dead in the vehicle. One cartridge, one assegai and one golf club were found next to the dam and seized as exhibits.”
On Tuesday, Thakeng confirmed investigations into this matter were still continuing, and five suspects were still on the loose.
“We can confirm that on the 03 January 2025 at 08:00 members of Burgersfort Detective Services, Murder and Robbery and Sekhukhune District Tracking Team held an operation to trace wanted suspects.
A 25-year old suspect was arrested and charged for murder that occurred during 29 December 2024. He appeared on the 06 January 2025 at Praktiseer Magistrate Court and remains in custody,” revealed Thakeng.
