FTLM’s Exco meeting addresses unfinished projects
BURGERSFORT
The Fetakgomo Tubatse Local Municipality’s (FTLM) Executive Committee (Exco) held its quarterly Exco Lekgotla at Thaba Moshate Casino last Wednesday.
The purpose of the meeting was to reflect on the performance of the municipality for the period under review.
In his address, the FTLM’s mayor, Cllr Eddie Maila, reflected on critical issues that he wanted the municipality to focus on. He reiterated the commitment made by the new council in 2021 – that no conditional grants should be returned to the Limpopo Treasury due to non-spending and poor performance while the communities are yearning for service delivery.
He challenged the administration to ensure that 70% of the conditional grants are spent at the end of the second quarter.
Maila called on the infrastructure development and technical services departments to expedite the completion of long outstanding projects so they may be handed over to the communities.
He also reflected on the objective of the municipality, which is to attain a clean audit opinion. “The municipality should build on the outcomes of the 2023/24 unqualified audit opinion and address the gaps identified by the auditor general to move to the next level. The FTLM should implement forward planning mechanisms to accelerate the provision of services to the communities.”
The institution achieved an overall performance of 88% for the first quarter of the 2024/25 financial year. This an improvement from the 72% attained in the same period in the previous financial year. Four out of seven departments achieved 100% of their set targets.
The Exco Lekgotla noted the good performance achieved by the municipality and further challenged other departments to attain 100% of their targets.
Maila also made a clarion call to communities to guard against those who are disrupting projects whenever there are challenges. “Projects are meant to advance the development of the communities and proper channels should be used to resolve disputes. The Office of the Mayor is always available to engage for sanity to prevail.”
He also expressed his appreciation to traditional leaders (magoshi)for their role in ensuring stability, and the communities for their co-operation when projects are implemented.
