MEC Matibe leads ‘Tourism Thursday’ initiative at Kruger National Park
Phalaborwa
MEC for Limpopo Department of Economic Development, Environment and Tourism (LEDET), Tshitereke Matibe, has led Limpopo’s ‘Tourism Thursday’ initiative at the Kruger National Park in Phalaborwa on Friday 13 September 2024.
During the activation, MEC Matibe guided the tour at the Kruger National Park, entering through the Phalaborwa Gate.
He was accompanied by Maruleng Local Municipality Mayor, Cllr Tsheko Musolwa, Limpopo Tourism Agency (LTA) CEO, Moses Ngobeni, and other officials.
The Tourism Thursday initiative was launched last month by Limpopo Premier, Dr Phophi Ramathuba, aiming to boost local tourism by showcasing key attractions across the province.
The Kruger National Park, one of Africa’s largest game reserves, plays a critical role in Limpopo’s tourism sector, drawing visitors worldwide.
Through Tourism Thursdays, the Limpopo Provincial Government seeks to spotlight major tourist destinations like Kruger, while fostering economic growth and community engagement.
The initiative also aligns with ongoing efforts to promote responsible tourism and sustainable development in the province.
By engaging local leaders and tourism stakeholders, the project is designed to uplift the tourism industry, offering a platform to explore Limpopo’s rich cultural heritage and biodiversity.
Furthermore, Limpopo is the host of over 70% of the world renowned Kruger National Park, which is also the home of the Masorini Archeological Museum, a late Iron Age site, found on a hillside a few kilometres from the Phalaborwa Gate.
The site was inhabited during the 1800’s by people who developed an advanced and sophisticated industry of mining, smelting iron ore and trading in iron products.
As part of the launching of the Tourism Thursdays, MEC Matibe took the tour to the Masorini Museum in Kruger National Park to see where the Ba-Phalaborwa people lived and the artifacts that they were using during those times.
Matibe said the main objective of Tourism Thursdays is for Limpopo to occupy the number one spot when it comes to being the tourism destination of choice and for the sector to create jobs especially for young people.
