A local cricketer  in Tubatse, Usman Ayub Rao continues to develop and promote the sport in Burgersfort and surrounding communities.  In honour of  former state icon Nelson Mandela, he organised the inaugural Mandela Cricket Cup. The games were held at the Tubatse Crossing Mall on July 21.

On the day, three cricket matches were played to  honour Madiba. Some of the dignitaries who honoured the games were local Pastor Rosa Williams.

The games pitted the host team, Tubatse Cricket Club and the visitors, Malegale Cricket Club. The T10 matches saw the host winning two of the three games.

In the first game, Malegale were victorious with 31 runs. In the second match, Tubatse regrouped to win the match with 5 wickets. The final match of the day was closely contested with Tubatse winning by 14 runs.
By winning two of the three games, the host clinched a trophy and gold medals. Malegale did not go home empty handed, they were handed a miniature trophy and silver medals for their efforts.

Rao said .“We thank all our sponsors for ensuring the games succeeded. They sponsored meals for both teams, refreshments as well as medals and trophies.
