Man arrested for alleged murder of his girlfriend appears in court
GA-MORETSELE – A 48 year-old Mpho Phetla who has been arrested for alleged murder of his 42 year-old old girlfriend at Ga-Moretsele Village in Jane Furse on Thursday, 27 June, appeared before the Sekhukhune Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 1 July, and his case was postponed to 8 July, for formal bail application.
The suspect was arrested in the early hours of Saturday, 29 June, subsequent to an intelligence driven operation by members of Sekhukhune Tracing Team.
Colonel Malesela Ledwaba, Limpopo Provincial Police spokesperson, said the suspect’s arrest followed police’s response to a complaint about a person being attacked at their place of residence.
Ledwaba indicated that upon arrival at the specified place, they discovered a woman’s body lying in a pool of blood with stab wounds to her head and face. “The suspect had already fled the scene. The deceased’s boyfriend was arrested while at his hideout within the Nebo policing area. The motive behind the incident will be determined through ongoing police investigations, but domestic violence cannot be ruled out,” explained Ledwaba.
The Provincial Commissioner of South African Police Service in Limpopo, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe has commended the swift arrest of the suspect. “We are deeply saddened by another senseless killing of a vulnerable woman allegedly at the hands of her partner. We will do everything in our powers to ensure justice is served,” said General Hadebe.
