At least 96 000 people were expected to cast their special votes in Limpopo on Monday and Tuesday.
The Limpopo IEC’s electoral officer, Nkaro Mateta, said the voting stations opened at 09:00 on Monday morning.
“We were ready for the special votes. As Limpopo, we have more home visits than station visits. In total, we had more than 96 000 homes that we needed to visit before 17:00 on Tuesday. We had more than 4 000 teams visiting the voters at their homes. More than 60 000 people were expected to visit our stations on Monday and Tuesday. Its was all system go – our ballot papers and all the material we required to administer the special votes were at the stations.”
She said they have arranged specialised cars for officials to travel to the mountainous rural homes of the province. “We will need to reach everyone for the special votes, whether they are far or near,” she assured.
Meanwhile, Limpopo police have announced that they are ready to ensure the safety and security of all citizens during the national and provincial government elections.
“Our officers are dedicated to ensure that every citizen can exercise their right to vote in a safe and secure environment. We urge the public to co-operate with the law enforcement authorities and report any suspicious activities to help us maintain peace and order during this period,” said the Limpopo SAPS commissioner, Lieutenant Colonel Thembi Hadebe.
