Two minor girls raped in separate incidents

GLEN COWIE/EENZAAM – The South African Police Service (SAPS) have launched an investigation following two separate incidents of rape of minors in Glen Cowie and Eenzaam villages on Saturday and Friday respectively.

On Saturday, 18 May, a 15 year-old girl was raped in Glen Cowie Village within the Nebo policing precinct at about 19:00.

Colonel Malesela Ledwaba, Limpopo Provincial Police spokesperson, said according to information, the victim was coming from a wedding ceremony walking back to her residence when an unknown man approached her from behind at Matsumane Sport Ground.

Ledwaba explained that the suspect came running, apparently grabbed her by the neck and threatened to kill her. He pushed her to the ground, undressed her before raping her. Thereafter, the suspect fled the scene.

He informed that the victim reported the incident to her mother and she was taken to hospital for medical treatment.

“Police were informed and opened a case of rape. The docket was transferred to Groblersdal Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit,” added Ledwaba.

On Friday, 17 May, a five year-old girl was raped at Eenzaam Village under Hlogotlou policing precinct. Brigadier Hlulani Mashaba, Limpopo Provincial Police spokesperson, informed that it is reported that the victim’s mother became suspicious when the girl returned from school crying, and upon checking her, she realized she may have been raped.

Mashaba said the mother immediately took the girl to a local clinic for medical examination where it was confirmed that she was raped.

“The matter was reported to the local police. The suspect is currently unknown and police investigations are ongoing,” indicated Mashaba.
