Sekhukhune Volleyball Federation hosts regional volleyball selection

Roosenekal – On Saturday 11 May, hundreds of young people from various parts of the district converged at Roosenekal in Ellias Motsoaledi Local Municipality (EMLM), to take part in the Sekhukhune Volleyball Federation selections.

More than 60 players, from various volleyball teams in the district, were selected to represent the Sekhukhune in the Limpopo Provincial selections to be held soon at Ngoako Ramathlodi Sports Complex in Seshego outside Polokwane.

The players were selected from the eleven volleyball teams that are currently participating within the volleyball league in Sekhukhune District Municipality. Various schools from different villages of Sekhukhune Region are also forming part of the teams that are currently taking part in the league.

Chairperson of Sekhukhune District Volleyball Association, Katlego Mthombeni, said the selections went as planned and they are confident that Sekhukhune players will form part of the team that will be selected in the province.

“The selections were competitive, all players shown determination, however, it came to a stage where we had to choose 60 players from the rest who will be going to the provincial selections,” he said.

Mthombeni furthered said they started the league to give volleyball sporting code a boost in the rural communities.

“Our aim is to make volleyball the fastest growing sporting code in Sekhukhune Region. We are impressed with the way the volleyball league is unfolding and we are happy that the teams are participating without any hindrance,” he said.

Mthombeni indicated that the league is currently having support from the Limpopo Department of Sports, Arts and Culture and recognized by the Limpopo Volleyball Association as well as Volleyball South Africa.

“We host the league games in different age groups which are open, under-19, under-17, under-15 and under-13. Each player is compelled to have their birth certificates for registrations to avoid age cheating,” explained Mthombeni.

He said they are expecting to complete their league in October with winners set to receive prizes that will be sponsored by the Sports, Arts and Culture Department.

Mthombeni said after the league is completed, regional selections will be held to choose a team that will be representing Sekhukhune in the province and national levels.

Mthombeni appreciated the support from schools and teams that are committed to participate within the league.

“We encourage more schools and teams to affiliate with Sekhukhune Volleyball Federation. We are grateful with the support we are getting from the Department of Sports, Arts and Culture,” he said.

However, Mthombeni, who is also managing Black Rangers Volleyball team in Tafelkop, has pleaded with good Samaritans for support.

“Black Rangers is the only volleyball team lacking support in the league where parents have to dig from their own pockets to contribute for transportation when players attending the games. I appeal to anyone who might help to come forward,” he said. Mthombeni can be contacted on 076 347 6601.
