Rape accused gets ten years behind bars
STEELPOORT – The South African Police Service (SAPS)’s Burgersfort Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit secured a significant conviction against a man involved in a case of rape of a woman.
The sentences were handed down by the Burgersfort Regional Court on 30 April. The court heard that on 1 May 2022 in Tubatse, a 19 year-old woman was raped by the 29 year-old man on her way from visiting her boyfriend.
The accused, Milford Equal Lesele, gave the woman a lift after she hitchhiked his white Toyota Quantum. On the way, he drove passed her stopping point and proceeded with her to Steelpoort where he forcefully undressed and raped her.
He was arrested in May 2022 after the woman opened a case of rape against him. Lesele, now aged 31 was sentenced to 10 years imprisonment. The court further declared him unfit to possess a firearm. He was given bail until he was found guilty on 12 March 2024.
The Provincial Commissioner of South African Police Service in Limpopo, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, welcomed the sentence handed down to the accused.
