President Ramaphosa and President Masisi visit passenger bus accident site
LIMPOPO – President Cyril Ramaphosa along with his counterpart from the Republic of Botswana, President Mkgweetsi Masisi on Thursday, 11 April visited the bus accident site where 45 citizens of Botswana perished at Mmamatlakala Bridge along the R518 in Limpopo on 28 March.
The heads of state and government commenced the visit with a closed briefing by officials in Mokopane before proceeding to the accident site.
President Ramaphosa conveyed condolences on behalf of the government of South Africa to the Republic of Botswana following the tragic accident of a passenger bus that was transporting an Easter pilgrimage that was on its way to Z.C.C St Engenas headquarters in Moria.
The only survivor of the carnage, an 8 year-old girl, who sustained serious injuries has since been airlifted back to Botswana. The families of the six victims of the bus crash, who have been positively identified, received the remains of their loved ones on 12 April at Mokopane Hospital and a process for their repatriation was kick started.
During the visit to site of the accident, President Ramaphosa and President Masisi had publicly committed to the families and people of Botswana that the process of scientific identification of the remaining victims will be accelerated.
Premier Chupu Mathabatha, Minister in the Presidency Khumbudzo Ntshavheni, Minister Candith Mashego-Dlamini, Limpopo MEC for Health, Dr. Phophi Ramathuba and other MECs together with mayors and officials from various sectors and stakeholders formed part of the site visit.
