Ephraim Mogale Local Municipal hosted its annual Mayor’s Cup
Ga-Matlala Ramoshebo – The highly anticipated edition of the Ephraim Mogale Local Municipality (EPMLM) 2024 Mayor’s Cup was held at the Two-for-Joy Sports Ground in Ga-Matlala Ramoshebo, EPMLM Ward 5 on Saturday 6 April. According to the municipality, the annual tournament is aimed at building social cohesion and unearthing rural talent in both football and netball sporting codes within the local municipality.
The competition featured champions from four clusters across the local municipality, battling for the first prize of the tournament that included sporting codes like female soccer and male soccer and netball. The age limit for the competition was strictly for players under 21 years.
Among government dignitaries who came to support the sporting event were Deputy Minister of Public Enterprises Obed Bapela, Executive Mayor of Sekhukhune District Municipality (SDM), Cllr Minah Bahula, EPMLM Mayor Cllr Given Moimana, EPMLM Council Speaker Cllr Rebecca Lentsoane, EPMLM Council Chief Whip Cllr Lina Magane, councillors and the general public.
During the tournament, EPMLM Ward 5 football team defeated EPMLM Ward 14 4-3 on penalties after both teams played a draw in a 90 minutes match. Ward 5 were crowned champions and were awarded a trophy, gold medals and soccer kit.
In ladies football, EPMLM Ward 4 defeated EPMLM Ward 6 1-0 in the final match and walked away with a trophy, gold medals and soccer kit.
The EPMLM Ward 9 triumph in the netball sporting code final match when defeating EPMLM Ward 6 and were rewarded a trophy, gold medals and netball kit. The runner ups for both soccer and netball were also awarded kits and bronze medals.
Mayor Moimana took the opportunity to thank all the teams that participated in this year’s tournament and the organizers who made the tournament a success.
“We are very happy with this competition, as its not only building social cohesion but also exposes talent and provides a platform for the municipality’s youth to showcase their God given traits. Congratulations to all the wards that reached the semi-finals and especially those that won gold medals in all sports,” said Moimana.
