The Limpopo Department of Health (LDoH), has embarked on ‘Operation Bula Mahlo Project’ in Jane Furse Hospital, Makhuduthamaga Local Municipality (MLM).
The month-long project commenced with the aim of restoring eyesight and clearing the cataract backlog across the province.
This programme started on 8 March until 28 March 2024 by a team of ophthalmologists lead by LDoH MEC, Dr Phophi Ramathuba and has performed cataract surgeries on more than 346 patients under this Bula Mahlo Project.
LDoH Spokesperson, Neil Shikwambana, said Operation Bula Mahlo is a marathon of cataract surgeries, responding to the increasing demand for these procedures and enhancing access to care for patients in need.
“Supported by the Sishen Iron Ore Company-Community Development Trust (SIOC-CDT), this project has already brought specialized ophthalmic services to rural hospitals from 8 to 28 March 2024,” explained Shikwambana.
Dr Ramathuba said they are thrilled as the department to launch the cataract operations marathon, which will help them address the backlog of cataract surgeries, improve access to care, and make a meaningful difference in the lives of the patients.
“We believe that all South African citizens have the right to see as long as the condition causing blindness can be cured,” said MEC Ramathuba.
