Makamu hands over title deeds  to Mapodile residents

STEELPOORT –

In an effort to advance property rights and foster community development, the MEC for co-operative governance, human settlements and traditional affairs (Coghsta), Basikopo Makamu, handed some title deeds over to the residents of Mapodile Township on Human Rights Day, March 21.
Makamu said the government intended to speed up the process of issuing out title deeds to the rightful beneficiaries. With about 800 title deeds being handed over to beneficiaries on the day, Coghsta saw it fit to have the Housing Advisory Panel and Rental Housing Tribunal to educate the public on the services provided by both bodies to homeowners, landlords and tenants.
Delivering his keynote address, Makamu expressed that the handing over of title deeds gives beneficiaries full title ownership of their houses. “Having received title deeds today, you are now the sole owners of these properties. This event is not only a celebration of human rights, but also a tangible step towards empowering the community and promoting socio-economic development in the region.”
The ceremony also gave residents the opportunity to raise issues concerning them in the area. “I am happy that the yard now belongs to me, but we are pleading with the government to provide us with clean water,” said one resident, Emelia Maphake.
