FTLM vows to accelerate services and to invest in the youth
POLOKWANE
Fetakgomo Tubatse Local Municipality (FTLM) has vowed to continue accelerating services within the municipality. The pledge was made by Municipal Manager (MM) Mogaramedi Makgata and acting mayor Cllr Modipadi Mashego during the 2023/ 24 Exco Lekgotla for the first quarter.
The session was held at Shamrock Lodge in Polokwane on October 20, it included a media networking session in which media houses were updated about developments in the FTLM.
Makgata indicated that the Municipality achieved 88% overall performance under the period review. This is for the first time since the merger of the two municipalities that such performance is achieved.
He said more than 500 local youths are expected to benefit from a partnership between the Fetakgomo Tubatse Local Municipality (FTLM) and the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE).
The two institutions entered into a partnership in which 517 young unemployed graduates will be enrolled into an 18-month youth empowerment and development programme.
The R36m programme will see local youth participate in occupational health and safety and waste management campaigns, forestry monitoring, river protection, as well as climate change ambassadorships.
“This partnership will see the municipality raising awareness on the effects of climate change and littering on the environment
“The recruits will be spread throughout the wards of the municipality. They will interact with all stakeholders on public education about the catastrophic effects of climate change and the unhealthy environment,” said Makgata.
According to the FTLM, this programme will also address the high rate of unemployment among the youth.
He said 60% of beneficiaries will be women, and 2% people living with disabilities.
“The FTLM has procured two new trucks for waste management, which will be used for waste collection and removal. We are negotiating with the local mines to support the municipal greening initiatives, as this will contribute towards creation of jobs and business opportunities. Fetakgomo Tubatse is committed to fight against climate change to preserve the future for the younger generation,” he added.
He said the FTLM received an accolade for being the cleanest municipality in Sekhukhune. The award was handed during the Greenest Municipality Competition (GMC) which was held at the Peter Mokaba stadium in Polokwane on October 10.
“This means FTLM will now represent the district as the cleanest municipality.”
With regards to service delivery, acting mayor Mashego confirmed Fetakgomo Tubatse Municipality has entered into Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Northam Booysendal Mine to install high mast lights in Kutullo Maseven, Ga-Masha and Ga-Rantho villages.
“The safety of our community is a major concern to us. Makgata and Hennie Muller from Booysendal signed the MOU on behalf of the two institutions on October 12. A total of 25 lights will be installed in the four villages,” confirmed Mashego.
She thanked the administration for a sterling work in steering the institution in a right direction.
