Makhuduthamaga amongst winners during Greenest Municipality Competition

The Makuduthamaga Municipality’s implementation of strategies and policies for green economy got a nod at this year’s Greenest Municipality Competition (GMC) which was held at the Peter Mokaba stadium in Polokwane on October 10.
The competition is organised and facilitated by the Department of Economic Development, Environment and Tourism (LEDET) in partnership with other sector departments such as the South African Local Government Association (SALGA) and Cooperative governance and Traditional Affairs, the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and Environmental as well as the Department of Water and Sanitation.
Makhuduthamaga has been involved and participated in this competition since 2008 and winning numerous accolades and awards for its innovative measures that protects and nature the environment.
The Municipal Manager, Ronald Moganedi said the municipal concept of embracing full green economy is in full motion and he is happy that Makhuduthamaga also contributes to the collective efforts by government in responding to challenges and concerns posed by climate change.
The assessment was tied to the provision of waste management,water management and conservation, tree planting and greening as well as energy efficiency.
“As human beings we are connected to the environment. So it is indeed an honour to have our projects recognised at this platform and we will continue to initiate demonstrable projects and services delivery initiatives that embraces the green revolution and programs for a sustainable economic development.
“The municipality has won R20.000 in 2019, with which we channelled towards purchasing of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) products for our waste general employees. This year we have been awarded R35 000, the funds that goes directly to the public purse and if the council ratify, will be intended towards other environmental related projects” said the MM, Moganedi.
Makhuduthamaga Municipality came second in this year’s competition with a whopping 57% following Fetakgomo Tubatse Municipality which claimed position 1 , scoring 60% and with the Ephraim Mogale Municipality tailing and settling for the 3rd position, with 55% in the Sekhukhune District.
Mayor of Makhuduthamaga Municipality Minah Bahula, welcomed the good news and encouraged team Makhuduthamaga to double their efforts going forward, and also called on “more public support and involvement in preserving nature and its resources.
“We are mandated by the constitution to promote safety and a healthy environment for our people”, she added.
