World Mental Health Day commemorated in Tabamoopo Hospital
Lebowakgomo
The Limpopo Department of Health has on Tuesday 10 October commemorated World Mental Health Day at Thabamoopo Hospital in Lebowakgomo.
The day was dedicated to spread awareness about mental health issues, reducing the stigma associated with mental illness and promoting the importance of mental health.
This year’s World Mental Health Day was commemorated under the theme: “Mental health is a universal human right.”
Addressing the event, MEC for Health in Limpopo, Dr Phophi Ramathuba, said the department continues to raise awareness about mental health problems and the need for seeking help.
“We also encourage individuals to open up to friends, family and healthcare providers about their struggles with mental health. Mental illness is often stigmatized and the associated stigma prevents individuals from seeking help. As we observe this World Mental Health Day, our aim is to reduce this stigma by spreading awareness and educating people about mental health,” she said.
Ramathuba has called upon families and people who are living with mental health care users to support them and not discriminate them.
Ramathuba indicated that World Mental Health Day highlights the importance of mental health and the need to prioritize it like physical health.
“By raising awareness, reducing stigma, and advocating for improvements in mental health care, the day plays a significant role in promoting a healthier and happier world,” she said.
