MEC for Social Development in Limpopo, Nandi Ndalane, has called for the protection of elderly citizens against ill-treatment and any form of harm from the public.

Ndalane said when delivering keynote address representing Limpopo Premier Stanley Mathabatha during the International Day of Older Persons held on Sunday 1 October at Mahlatjana Community Hall in Mafefe Village outside Lebowakgomo, Lepelle-Nkumpi Local Municipality (LNLM).

The event was commemorated under the theme: “Resilience of Older Persons in a changing World”, and saw dozens of elderly people from various parts of the local municipality attending.

October is declared Social Development Month with the first day being celebrated worldwide as a day for older persons.

“Elderly people have a major role to play in society as they are reservoirs of indigenous knowledge, thus, it is pivotal that they are protected from all forms of harm, abuse and ill-treatment.  It is government’s duty to always uphold and promote the rights of older people,” Ndalane said.

She informed that elderly people have a major role to play in society as they are reservoirs of indigenous knowledge, thus, it is pivotal that they are protected from all forms of harm, abuse and ill-treatment.

“Fulfilling promises of the universal declaration of human rights for older persons across generations. This event places the spotlight on the specificity of older persons around the world, for the enjoyment of their rights and in addressing violations,” she said.

Ndalane said Limpopo takes pride in elders who make meaningful contributions in the field of sport, arts, economy, media and many others.

Since its inception, the day is celebrated by raising awareness about issues affecting the elderly. Furthermore, it is a day to appreciate the contributions that older people made and are still making in the society.
