Bogus initiation school closed down in Kutupu

In response to a call made by Limpopo House of Traditional Leaders, saying they will take “zero tolerance” against initiation schools that operates illegally in the province, the police in Hlogotlou outside Groblersdal have closed down an illegal initiation school at Kutupu Village on Friday 30 June 2023.
The bogus initiation school was closed down during an operation conducted by the Hlogotlou Police in conjunction with the Department of Corporative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs (COGHSTA).
Colonel Malesela Ledwaba, Limpopo Provincial Police Spokesperson, said according to the information available at this stage, the police receive information alleging that there was an initiation school that was in practice at Kutupu village, in contravention of the Initiation Act.
“It was reported that the school was discovered on Sunday, 25 June 2023 and through proper inspections, it was found that the school has not registered with department as per prescribed Act,” he said.
Ledwaba indicated that during the operation, there were no injuries or fatalities reported from the initiation school in question and decisions have been taken for the initiates to be moved to a registered initiation school.
“The suspects responsible for the illegal practices of initiation school have been served with a notice to appear before Nebo Magistrate’s Court facing charges of Contravention of Initiation Act. Police investigations are continuing,” he said.
Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, The Provincial Police Commissioner, applauded the teams for taking appropriate action against the illegal initiation school owners.
Earlier this year, the Limpopo House of Traditional Leaders warned traditional surgeons and headmen to refrain from opening illegal initiation schools that have not registered with COGHSTA. The initiation schools’ season has since opened on 16 June until 15 July.
Its Chairperson, Hosi Pheni Ngove, pleaded with principals of the approved schools to ensure that all the initiates get approval from their parents or guardians before undergoing the passage to manhood during the current initiation season.
