Itirele Primary learner wins district creative writing competition
Praktiseer
Thutego Maphanga, a grade two pupil at Itirele Primary School in Praktiseer outside Burgersfort, is the winner of Sekhukhune East District Creative Writing Competition.
The seven-year-old entered the competition earlier this year after the Department of Education ran the competition in primary and secondary schools in Limpopo Province.
Thutego entered the competition representing her school in the Tubatse Circuit in foundation phase where she obtained the second position.
Following her triumph in the circuit level, Thutego participated in the Bohlabela Cluster Circuits where she scooped the second position. She later emerged as overall winner in the Sekhukhune East Creative Writing Competition, held at Apel outside Jane Furse on Wednesday 31 August.
The learner will be representing Sekhukhune East in the Limpopo Provincial Creative Writing Completion on a date that is still to be announced.
Thutego’s teacher, Charlotte Mphogo, said she was overwhelmed and happy about the pupil’s achievements, especially when you consider that the competition received hundreds of entries from different schools in different circuits.
“This clearly proves that indeed the pen is definitely mightier than the sword,” she said.
Mphogo said she noticed the creative writing ability from the learner during classroom tasks, describing her as a good listener who is willing to do what she is told.
“She was excelling through creative writing during the assessment of the reading and writing analysis in the classroom. She would illustrate her writing creativity through any tasking she is given in class beyond the teacher’s expectations,” Mphogo said.
Mphogo said Thutego is a gifted learner who works exceptionally hard and they are expecting more from her.
“We congratulate her for the awesome achievement and for being resilient throughout the competition. Our hopes are high that she will represent us in honor in the upcoming provincial competition. We are proud of her,” she said.
