Mayor commits a better home for the disabled

Tafelkop

The Mayor of Elias Motsoaledi Local Municipality, Cllr David Tladi, has committed to construct a new structure for Reagishane Disability Centre in Tafelkop outside Groblersdal.

Tladi made the commitment during his Nelson Mandela Day celebration at the centre premises in the village on Monday.

During the daily activities, as part of celebrating the 67 Minutes of Nelson Mandela Day, the mayor donated five wheelchairs and later conducted a sod-turning at the site where the new building of the centre will be situated.

The centre was established in 2021 and currently housed 19 children living with different forms of disabilities. Since its inception, Reagishane operates in a small space at the Makua’s house in Tafelkop Bapeding Section, Elias Motsaoledi Local Municipality Ward 26.

The centre’s new structure will be built with help of donors and will include main offices, a hall, modern toilet structure to cater people living with disabilities and staff equipment.

Tladi said the programme was part of the International Nelson Mandela Day initiatives, celebrated annually on July 18.

“Mandela Day is a clarion call to action for people to recognise their ability to have a positive effect on others around them. In remembrance of Nelson Mandela, we must be inclusive whilst creating safer spaces for those who are living with disability in modern day South Africa,” said Tladi.

He said the day inspires people to embrace the values that the late former president shared, and ultimately seeks to empower communities everywhere to its theme: “Do what you can, with what you have, where you are and Make Every Day a Mandela Day.”
