What are we benefiting from our democracy, asked youth.

What are we benefiting from our democracy? Youth in the Sekhukhune region asked. And Sekhukhune Times took to the street to figure out from them the benefits of this democracy.

The youth however agreed that the nation made remarkable progress since 1994, the spectre of inequality, poverty and unemployment remains one of the most glaring impediments to South Africa’s goal of national unity and social cohesion.

Tshepo Mapheto

“Freedom Day is the commemoration of the first democratic elections held in South Africa on 27 April 1994. But to me people are abusing the so called democracy. Our government is not efficient, transparent and responsive towards our current social key issues of our country. Majority of elected public officials are involved in many criminal activities and no one is holding them accountable, what kind of democracy is that?”

Initia Mogoswana

“Benefits of the democracy are that citizens have a voice ever since the democracy and can make the change in society. We live in a society where everyone is respected and free. We have free education. We get to stand for elections and choose who makes the decisions on our behalf. We are able to hold elected representatives accountable because of democracy. We have the freedom to act, speak and think freely,”
