Suspects arrested for possession of chrome as part of police operations
GA-MATHIPA – A total of 1251 suspects aged between 18 and 48 years-old were arrested for crimes ranging from murder, attempted murder, robberies, rape, burglaries, stock theft and fraud.
The operations, conducted by the South African Police Service (SAPS)’s various units, were conducted across Limpopo Province’s districts from 28 March 22 until Sunday, 04 April.
Lieutenant Colonel Mamphaswa Seabi, Limpopo Provincial Police Spokesperson, said in Sekhukhune district, two suspects aged 34 and 41 years-old who were driving two trucks loaded with precious minerals were on 1 April arrested along the R37 Road at Ga-Mathipa Village outside Burgersfort by members of Limpopo Highway Patrol (LHP) for possession of chrome with an estimated value of R80 000 per each truck.
Seabi informed that both the truck drivers failed to produce legal documents for being in possession of the minerals.
He added that police recovered various items during the operations including 11 firearms, 60 knives, five stolen vehicles, large quantities of dagga, 44 dagga plants, sticks of counterfeit cigarettes, liquor, Kat, crystal meth and nyaope drugs during the operations.
Acting Provincial Commissioner of police in Limpopo, Lieutenant General Jan Scheepers, praised the officers for continuously arresting criminals to ensure the safety of all communities across the province.
Some of the arrested suspects have started appearing before various magistrates’ court across the province.
