Political leadership briefed on SEZ

Newly crowned Sekhukhune District Municipality (SDM) ‘s executive mayor Julia Mathebe was on Thursday briefed about the FetakgomoTubatse Special Economic Zone (SEZ).
The session was held at Thaba Moshate Casino. Other mayors in the district also attended, the event this included FetakgomoTubatse Local Municipality (FTLM)’s Eddie Maila, and representatives of mayors of Elias Motsoaledi, Ephraim Mogale and Makhuduthamaga Local Municipalities were officially briefed about the status of the FetakgomoTubatse Special Economic Zone (SEZ).
This workshop was convened to bring the newly elected political leaders in the municipalities of Sekhukhune up to speed with the SEZ.
The FetakgomoTubatse SEZ is a growth engine that has been earmarked for establishment in the Steelpoort area, to catalyse economic activity in pursuance of government’s strategic objectives of industrialisation, regional development and employment creation.
It has an investment value of R45 billion and will be implemented through the collaborative effort of the three spheres of government and the private sector.
Some of the infrastructural benefits that will accrue from the SEZ include Information Communication Technology, roads network, bulk water service infrastructure for both the SEZ and communities, and the industrialisation hub.
The meeting reconstituted the SEZ Political Steering Committee that comprises political leaders and senior officials and will be chaired by Mathebe.
Mathebe lauded progress that has been made so far toward the establishment of this catalytic economic project. “The FetakgomoTubatse SEZ is too important to fail,” said Mathebe.
“The seriousness of the Covid-19 devastation says to us that the implementation and success of the Economic Reconstruction and Recovery Plan are non-negotiable. Projects such as the FetakgomoTubatse Special Economic Zone will play a crucial role in the realisation of the priorities set out in the Economic Reconstruction and Recovery Plan,” Mathebe added.
She emphasised that all relevant stakeholders such as traditional leaders, business forums, civil society and the community at large must be consulted and be made part of the SEZ.
She also urged the technical committee to move with speed in finalising the quadripartite agreement that will be signed by the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition, the Limpopo province as represented by the Ledet, the SDM through its agency the Sekhukhune Development Agency (SDA) and the FTLM.
